Ethiopia Earned $71.1 Million From Leather Exports

Ethiopia earned 71.1 million US dollars in revenue from the export of leather and leather products over the last seven months according to the Ministry of Industry.

The revenue raised in the reporting period exceeds that earned in the same period last fiscal year by more than 62% said Melaku Taye, Communications Director with the Ministry.

The revenue earned, however, is less than the target sum because of challenges associated with discovering new markets, the international economic situation and problems with management he noted.

Domestic leather tanneries were unable to achieve their projected exports because they primary attention has been to supply the national market according to Melaku.

Effort is being exerted to earn 206 million dollar from the leather industry this financial year explained Birhanu Serjebo, Corporate Communications Director, with the Leather Industry Development Institute.

The institution is working in collaboration with Indian bodies to enhance the market for Ethiopian leather goods on the international market noted Birhanu.
