Ethiopia to Export Meat to China

The Ethiopian Meat and Dairy Technology Institute, is seeking to export meat directly from Ethiopia to China.

Ethiopian meat including all internal organs is currently being exported to China via Vietnam but entering the Chinese market directly will be a significant development said Gedey Gebre Medhin, Director of the institute.

The institute has been dealing with problems associated with delays in the slaughtering process as well as seeking new export destinations said Gedey.

There are currently ten new slaughter houses under construction in Ethiopia through domestic and international investment he said. Two of the new slaughter houses are on the final stages of construction and will become operational soon with experts and investors collaborating for efficient activity said Gedey.

Ethiopia is increasingly being recognized as a potential source for meat imports by more and more countries and collaborative efforts between the institute and investors in the industry can ensure that Ethiopian meat exports will be widely available on the global market according to Gedey.

Towards this end the institute is also working with existing slaughterhouses to enable them enhance their activity alongside government incentives that support the import of machinery and refrigerated trucks explained Gedey.

Ethiopia will be able to be competitive on the international market by expanding market destination and enhancing the quality of production he concluded.

In related news, two companies based in Saudi Arabia and the United States have initiated investment projects in Oromia Regional State with an aim to export poultry.
