Moha Soft Drinks, Ethiopia Drills Water Well

Moha Soft Drinks, producer of Pepsi products in Ethiopia, is set to extract 300,000 liters of ground water every day from a well drilled on the premises of its plant in the Teklehaymanot area of Addis Ababa.

The plant, which produced 17,000 cases of soft drinks per day, had stopped production over the past month due to water shortages, creating a scarcity of Pepsi products on the local market.

The shortage in Pepsi products has affected consumers in Addis Ababa and surrounding areas according to retailers.

The water problem is due to efforts to ration water by the Addis Ababa Water and Sewage Authority as a result of the increasing demands for drinking water especially in high population areas according to Tesfalem Bayu, Deputy Technical Manager of the authority.

The Moha plant in Teklehaymanot is expected to restart production this week with 300,000 liters of water being supplied by the ground well as of Friday.

Moha has five plants in Ethiopia which produce 99,000 cases of soft drinks daily commanding 55.3% of the local market.

A sixth factory is expected to become operational in the Summit area, Addis Ababa, this month said Getachew Birbo, Chief Executive Officer of the company.
