Ethiopia Upgrades 10 Industrial Parks to Special Economic Zones

Industrial ParkThe Ethiopian Investment Commission (EIC) announced today that 10 of the country's industrial parks have been promoted to Special Economic Zones (SEZs) under a new initiative to attract Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), boost job creation, and enhance trade and productivity.

This development aligns with Ethiopia's recently enacted Special Economic Zone Proclamation No. 1322/2024, which establishes the criteria for industrial parks to attain SEZ status. Requirements include a minimum land area of 50 hectares and the fulfillment of key infrastructure standards.

The upgraded parks—Adama, Bahir Dar, Bole Lemi, Debre Birhan, Hawassa, Jimma, Kilinto, Kombolcha, Mekelle, and Semera—were selected following a comprehensive evaluation by the Ethiopian Investment Board. Previously, the Dire-Dawa SEZ was the only park with this designation.

The upgrades bring Ethiopia’s total SEZ count to 11, marking a significant step in the country’s industrialization agenda. According to the EIC, future expansions or operational changes within SEZs must comply with the SEZ Proclamation and associated directives.

The Industrial Parks Development Corporation (IPDC), which manages the upgraded parks, expressed optimism that the SEZ designation will enhance competitiveness, attract investors, and drive economic growth.
