Tendaho Sugar Factory to Put Ethiopia on Top

Tendaho Sugar factory is expected to put Ethiopia in the number one place for sugar cane crushing capacity when it becomes fully operational according to Million Moges Deputy Manager for the project.

The project established in Afar Regional State at a cost of 11.8 billion birr has the capacity to crush 26,000 tons of sugar daily when fully operational said Million. The factory will be able to crush 13,000 tons of sugar cane in the first phase of the project he noted.

The Tendaho factory will have an estimated output of 600,000 tons of sugar every year with 50% of the product expected to be for export.

The factory will also produce ethanol and 70MW electric power explained Million.

More than 60% of the construction project on the sugar factory has been completed he said.

It is to be remembered that the Ethiopian Sugar Corporation is to import 300,000 quintals of sugar beginning in February. It is estimated that sugar imports, mainly from Brazil and India, will cost Ethiopia 555 million birr including warehouse rental and transportation.

The sugar will be imported at a cost of 1,850 birr for the quintal and is expected to retail for 1,264.40 per quintal on the Ethiopian market supported by government subsides.  The sugar will be sold by consumers’ cooperative unions and the Merchandise Wholesale and Import Trade Enterprise.
