Dangote to Set up a $400mln Cement Factory in Zambia

Dangote is planning to build factories and import terminals in Ethiopia

Dangote, Nigeria's biggest cement producer, is set to start setting up a 400 million dollar cement factory in Zambia this month, Felix Mutati, Zambia's commerce, trade and industry minister said on Monday.

Dangote is planning to build factories and import terminals in other countries including Ethiopia, Senegal, Ghana, Ivory Coast and Cameroon to bring its annual production capacity across Africa up to 46 million tonnes in five years' time, 30 million of it in Nigeria.

"We are expecting a team of construction experts from Dangote to arrive in Zambia either today or tomorrow and the building of the plant should be launched this month," Felix Mutati said.

When it reaches full production capacity in 2013, the cement factory is expected to produce about 1.5 million tonnes of cement annually, Mutati said.

According to Mutati the Dangote is targeting regional markets for its new cement factory in Zambia, particularly Congo DR.

The Nigerian cement producer's new factory would also bring competition, which is hoped to cause quality in product to increase and prices to go down, Mutati said.
