The South African National Accreditation System awarded accreditation to the Ethiopian Leather Industry Development Institute.
The accreditation is expected to enable Ethiopian leather products to gain automatic acceptability at international markets like European Union. This accreditation will translate in the increased competitiveness of Ethiopian products internationally by serving as a verification of the quality and in terms of health effects as well as the quality of the manufacturing equipments and processes said Wondu Legesse Director General of Leather Industry Development Institute.
The Leather Industry Development Institute is now engaged in an ongoing three year five million dollars worth plan which enable it to be accredited at the world class level.As it is to be remembered back in February 2011 Leather Industry Development Institute had passed second phase of accreditation that will help the institute to conduct laboratory tests and issue quality grades for leather products. And the first phase of accreditation for laboratory testing with ISO/IEC 17025 certificate was give back in December 2008, and the main international standard system was completed in December 2008.
LIDI plans to continue to grow in its competitiveness in the international market, its testing and research laboratory directorate is expected to have 27 modern chemical and physical instruments, with a view to give excellent testing and research support.
