Ethiopian Chlorine Factory to Begin Production

A chlorine factory built in Ethiopia will begin production in September according to the Addis Ababa Water and Sewerage Authority.

The factory will help save an estimated 20 million birr spent on the import 500 tons of chlorine every year according to Engineer Emiru Mekonnen, Production Head with the authority.

The factory is part of the expansion program launched at a cost of 500 million birr at the Dire And Legedadi water reservoirs said Emiru.

The expansion project is intended to enhance the capacity of the reservoirs and to reduce the amount of water wasted as well as to address sedimentation issues he added.

The chlorine factory is also expected to increase the production of clean water by 30,000 metric cubes.

It is to be remembered that the budget proposed by the Addis  Ababa City administration for the new fiscal year gives priority to water and sewerage services which make up 13% of the financial plan.

The City Administration made water and sewerage its top priority over the road development sector in a bid to improve the 73% water supply coverage of the city at the beginning of the current financial year.

The water coverage has increase to 93% due to projects funded by the 1.4 billion birr allocated to the sector this year.

A major portion of the budget allocated to water and sewerage services this year will go towards improving Addis Ababa’s sewerage system which has received little attention so far according to an official with the AAWSA.
