Ethio Telecom generated Birr 215.8 billion in total revenue during the recently concluded Ethiopian fiscal year, achieving 99.7 percent of its annual target, the company announced.
Presenting the state-owned operator’s annual performance, CEO Frehiwot Tamiru said revenue increased by 33.2 percent compared with the previous fiscal year.
The company continued expanding its telecommunications infrastructure during the year, constructing 603 new mobile base stations and raising the total number of mobile sites nationwide to 10,613.
Ethio Telecom also deployed 264 additional 4G sites, bringing the total number of 4G sites to 1,200. The expansion increased national 4G network coverage to 82.2 percent.
The operator extended its 5G network to seven additional towns, raising the number of towns with access to 5G services to 33. It also added capacity for 10.2 million users, increasing its overall network capacity to 115 million.
As part of its distribution network expansion, Ethio Telecom added 1.4 million copper and fiber connections. The company also installed 12.7 megawatts of additional green-energy infrastructure, bringing its total renewable-energy capacity to 39.7 megawatts.
According to the CEO, 44 percent of the company’s 10,613 mobile sites are equipped with backup generators, while 23,422 kilometres of network infrastructure are powered by solar energy.
Ethio Telecom expanded its enterprise digital infrastructure to serve 880 enterprise customers. The capacity of its servers, cache systems and international gateways also increased to 4.3 terabits per second.
The company said its infrastructure investments, valued at Birr 76 billion, are expected to improve service quality and support Ethiopia’s ambition to become a regional digital hub.
Ethio Telecom’s customer base reached 90.1 million, representing an 8.3 percent year-on-year increase and 101.7 percent of the company’s annual target.
Meanwhile, the number of customers using the telebirr mobile money platform rose to 60.59 million. Telebirr processed transactions worth Birr 4.19 trillion during the fiscal year, increasing the cumulative value of transactions since its launch to Birr 9.13 trillion.
Frehiwot said the platform currently records an average daily transaction value of Birr 11 billion. Its microfinance and digital credit services have reached 21.64 million customers.
Transactions conducted through Zemen Gebeya, Ethio Telecom’s digital marketplace, reached Birr 340.3 million during the year.
The company also registered 32 million citizens under Ethiopia’s national Digital ID initiative. Of these, seven million identification cards have been printed and made available through 502 collection centres nationwide.
