Ethio Telecom, Djibouti Telecom, and Sudatel Telecom Group have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the Horizon Fiber Initiative. This transformative project aims to enhance digital connectivity across Africa, linking the Horn of Africa to Europe and Asia through a high-capacity, redundant terrestrial fiber optic network.

The initiative represents a major upgrade to Africa's digital infrastructure, addressing the region’s demand for faster, more reliable connectivity. The multi-terabit fiber link will play a critical role in Africa’s digital transformation, reducing latency and improving access to high-speed services for businesses and individuals.

Discussions for the Horizon Fiber Initiative began in June 2024, with a joint technical team conducting feasibility studies and addressing challenges. The contract is expected to be finalized by January 2024, and the project aims to launch services by April 2025.

This partnership also provides a solution to issues faced by submarine cables in the Red Sea, which are prone to disruptions caused by environmental factors and sabotage. The terrestrial network connecting Djibouti, Sudan, and Ethiopia offers a cost-effective, resilient, and easily maintainable alternative.

The leaders of the three telecom companies emphasized the project’s alignment with Africa’s Digital Transformation Strategy 2030. Ethio Telecom highlighted its economic potential, Djibouti Telecom lauded its role in regional unity, and Sudatel underscored Sudan’s strategic position in enhancing regional connectivity.

The Horizon Fiber Initiative is poised to bridge the digital divide, enabling Africa to emerge as a global digital hub while fostering regional collaboration and innovation.
