Ethio Telecom officially launched its "Copper Switch-Off Initiative," which aims to migrate 100,000 customers from the existing copper network to high-speed fiber optic infrastructure by the end of this fiscal year.
This initiative will see 60,000 customers in Addis Ababa and 40,000 in regional areas transition to fiber, improving their internet experience with faster data services and more reliable connectivity. The first phase of the initiative will transfer 31,000 customers, with implementation set to begin next week. The company plans to fully convert Addis Ababa’s copper network to fiber within three years, with the rest of the country’s regional cities following over the next five years.
The modernization of the network is part of Ethio Telecom’s broader strategy to enhance service delivery by replacing outdated copper technology with advanced fiber optics. This upgrade is expected to ensure faster internet speeds and superior service for customers, alongside integrating new technologies such as LTE and 5G.
