Ethiopia’s IT Park Project to Create 300,000 Jobs

The IT Park project in Ethiopia is expected to create 300 thousand jobs when it is completed said the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology.

The project aims to enhance the quick growth of micro enterprises as well as benefiting companies in its vicinity to support the development of research institutes and creating trade relations and transfer of technology explained Beker Seid, Public Relations Officer with the Ministry.

It is also expected that the project will create favorable conditions to allow domestic companies to become competitive on the international markets he said.

The primary objectives of the IT Park are to provide IT based services for various sectors including manufacturing, software development, and research development as well as other services according to Beker.

The project can also serve to create cooperation between the private sector, research institutes and other parties allowing for collaboration in developing the industrial sector he added.

The two phase park is situated on 200 hectares divided in four zones, commercial, business, warehouse and knowledge. The first phase of the project is being constructed on 70 hectares of land.

The main part of the project is expected to cost more than 800 million birr. The project is being funded through a public-private mechanism making use public financing and funds from international and domestic investor according to Bekir.
