ZTE to Establish R&D Unit in Ethiopia

Chinese telecom corporation, ZTE, has proposed to set up a Research and Development Unit to serve the African market in Ethiopia as part of the future ICT Park said Debretsion Gebremichael, Information and Communication Technology Minister and in charge of the ICT Park project.

Huawei is one of the other Chinese and Indian ICT companies interested in establishing similar units in the ICT Park according to Debretsion.

Some parts of the ICT Park will be finalized by June and interested members of the Ethiopian Diaspora and local ICT firms are invited to register with the ministry to be a part of the ICT Park said Debretsion at an ICT meeting held at the Ghion Hotel.

The meeting focused on the opportunities and challenges in the Ethiopian sector and to discuss the Innovation Africa Digital event to be held in Addis Ababa this week.

The ICT Park under development is located behind the Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa.

The first phase of the ICT Park project expected to take three years to complete is in progress explained Debretsion.
The total cost of the project named ‘Technopolis’ has a budget of 45 million US dollars.
