EEPCo to Divide into Two Sections

The Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation is to divide into two sections. The utility provider will divide into a construction and utility divisions.

The construction section will be in charge of building and managing power generating stations while the utility section will be handling the transmission and distribution of electricity.

The Corporation has offered training for 550 of its managers on the implementation of the new structure. The restructuring is intended to make the corporation more efficient without threatening jobs according to the officials offering the training.

The restructuring program will put into practice the findings of a study undertaken by Italian Consultant, Ben and Company.

The corporation will be restructured into three main wings with the first to manage construction of electric projects and generation while the other two wings will concentrate on the transmission and distribution and the responsibility for power transmission and sales.

The restructuring will take the Corporation’s diversification and growth in terms of power generation, distribution and construction projects, into consideration. It will allow the EEPCo to divide responsibilities to enhance efficiency, save electricity, and address challenges that have troubled the utility in the past.

The EEPCo requires an estimated 182.2 billion birr for the generation of power, and to expand the transmission and distribution system. A major share of this budget, about 122.8 billion birr, will go towards the construction of dams and to harness alternative power generating schemes.

The Corporation is working towards realizing increased electricity export as per agreements reached with regional countries.
