Cold Storage Area at Ethiopian Airport to Begin Service

The cold storage area at Alula Aba Nega International Airport, Ethiopia will begin operations this June. The Mekelle airport storage area can store 150 tons of goods and perishable exports including fruits and vegetables, flowers, meat and fish said Wondim Teklu, Head of Public Relations with the Ethiopia Airports Enterprise.

The construction and installation of machinery at the storage area was carried out by Dutch company Geerlofs while the road connecting the storage area with the airport is being completed by the staff of the Enterprise. An office complex for the storage is being constructed by Gibril Geresu, a local construction company.

The project took two years to complete at an estimated cost of 28.4 million birr. Abergale, butchers, and some fruit and vegetable companies in Southern Tigray have agreed to store their exports at the storage facility with more expected when it becomes fully operational noted Wondim.

It is to be remembered that the Ginbot 20 International Airport at Bahir Dar commenced similar services after its storage area was completed last month. The storage facility was completed two months ahead of schedule by contractors Celtics, a Dutch company at a total cost of 21 million birr.

The access road between the airport and the storage area was constructed by the enterprise personnel while another local contractor, Memarafi Construction Company undertook the building of the storage office.

It is expected that international flights from the two airports planned to the Middle East will encourage the use of the storage areas.
