The Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU) generated Birr 118.91 billion in revenue during the 2025/26 fiscal year, surpassing its annual target of Birr 115.86 billion.
The revenue, generated from electricity sales, new customer connections and other operational activities, supported infrastructure development, service improvements and efforts to expand electricity access across the country.
According to the utility’s annual performance report, EEU recorded progress in revenue generation, electricity access, distribution network expansion, customer services and digital transformation during the fiscal year ended July 7, 2026.
EEU also contributed Birr 12.39 billion in taxes and other government revenues during the year, representing a 56 percent increase from the previous fiscal year.
Total expenditure reached Birr 133.6 billion, covering operational costs, infrastructure construction, maintenance and capital investment. The utility also mobilized additional internal resources to finance network upgrades and capacity expansion.
EEU connected 664,505 new customers during the fiscal year, increasing its total customer base to 5.88 million. Electricity access was also extended to 205 rural towns and villages through grid and off-grid solutions.
The utility expanded its electricity distribution network by 13,269 kilometers and rehabilitated 4,892 kilometers of existing lines. It also installed 8,834 distribution transformers, adding 1,621 megawatts of capacity to the network.
EEU purchased and distributed 18,319 gigawatt-hours of electricity for domestic and export markets, achieving 100.5 percent of its annual target. Electricity demand increased by 15.5 percent compared with the previous fiscal year.
Digital payment usage reached 95.3 percent during the year as EEU continued expanding its digital services. The utility also introduced and expanded services including smart metering, electronic receipts and multi-channel self-service platforms.
Electricity supply reliability improved during the reporting period, with the frequency of interruptions declining following routine inspections, preventive maintenance and infrastructure upgrades.
However, EEU continued to face operational challenges, including infrastructure theft and vandalism, electricity theft and right-of-way constraints.
For the 2026/27 fiscal year, the utility plans to connect 1.1 million new households, expand its distribution network by 12,549 kilometers and provide electricity access to 317 rural villages.
EEU also aims to increase electricity sales to 21,331 gigawatt-hours during the year while continuing efforts to improve service quality and expand access.
