Ethiopian Electric Utility Signs ETB 3 Billion Rehabilitation Project Agreement

EEU Rehabilitation Agreement

Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU) has signed an ETB 3 billion rehabilitation project agreement with Alpha TND & LTD and Capital Electech to upgrade electricity infrastructure in Ambo, Nekemte, and Asosa towns.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Ethiopian Electric Utility Chief Executive Officer Getu Geremew said the project is expected to improve the reliability of electricity supply in the selected towns. He urged the contractors to complete the work within the agreed timeframe and required quality standards.

The project will focus on modernizing and strengthening existing distribution infrastructure. As part of the rehabilitation and upgrading works, 325 kilometers of medium-voltage electric lines will be upgraded. The utility said the work is expected to increase network capacity and reduce power interruptions and technical problems.

The project also includes the rehabilitation and upgrading of 235 transformers. Of these, 70 transformers are located in Ambo, 121 in Nekemte, and 44 in Asosa.

Representatives of the companies, which are headquartered in Ghana and India, said they would contribute to the project through electric equipment supply, distribution network construction and upgrading, and electric line installation.

According to Ethiopian Electric Utility, the project is financed through ETB 1.2 billion and USD 12 million in support from the World Bank. The total project cost is ETB 3 billion, and the work is expected to be completed within two years.
