
The Ethiopian Electric Utility announced that 103 rural towns and villages were connected to electricity during the first nine months of the 2025/26 fiscal year.
According to the utility, the newly electrified areas include communities located far from the main power grid, as well as areas that had not previously been connected to electricity services.
Of the 103 rural towns and villages, 82 were connected to the main electricity grid, while 21 were supplied through off-grid solar power systems.
The expansion has benefited more than 31,000 households, along with health facilities and other social institutions in the newly connected areas.
During the same period, the Ethiopian Electric Utility also connected 423,200 new customers to electricity, showing an 18.6 percent increase compared to the same period of the 2024/25 fiscal year.
Of the newly connected customers, 31,298 are from rural towns and villages that recently gained access to electricity.
Among the new electricity customers, 74.2 percent are postpaid users, while 25.8 percent use prepaid meters.
The Ethiopian Electric Utility stated that the total number of customers currently using electricity services has reached 5.64 million.
