The Ethiopian government has restored the country’s daily diesel supply to its pre crisis level of 9 million liters as of today.

Minister of Finance Ahmed Shide announced the development during a press briefing, noting that the previous disruption was linked to the Middle East conflict, which contributed to rising global fuel prices and pressure on international supply chains.

At the height of the disruption, Ethiopia’s daily diesel supply had fallen by half, reaching around 4.5 million liters. The minister said fuel transportation from Djibouti to Addis Ababa has now resumed, while distribution to regional states is expected to begin tomorrow.

Ahmed Shide also stated that supplies of benzine and aviation fuel remained stable during the shortage and were not affected by the disruption.

The government has been importing fuel at higher prices through special procurement arrangements to reduce the impact of global price shocks on the domestic economy. According to the minister, this has resulted in an additional fuel subsidy cost of around Birr 20 billion per month, beyond previous spending levels.

The restoration of diesel supply is expected to ease pressure on the transportation and logistics sectors, which had been affected by the reduced supply.
