Ethiopian Electric Utility Collects Birr 52.26 Billion in First Half of 2025/26 Fiscal Year

The Ethiopian Electric Utility has reported collecting Birr 52.26 billion from energy sales and miscellaneous income during the first six months of the 2025/26 fiscal year, achieving 96 percent of its planned target.

The utility said Birr 52 billion was spent in recent months on improving and rebuilding electrical infrastructure to strengthen the reliability of power supply.

According to the utility, 266,916 new customers were connected to electricity over the same six-month period. This has pushed the institution’s total customer base beyond 5.46 million.

The utility also indicated that 94.8 percent of its customers now pay their monthly electricity bills through modern payment options, reflecting a growing shift toward digital payment systems.

In addition to performance updates, the Ethiopian Electric Utility said legal action has been taken against individuals accused of electricity theft and the destruction of electricity infrastructure and property. The utility stated that cases were brought before the courts and resulted in fines and prison sentences.
