The Ethiopian Mineral Corporation (EMC) and Sunbird Bioenergy Africa have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance Ethiopia’s renewable energy and biofuel production, marking a significant milestone in the country’s green economic transformation.
The partnership seeks to develop an integrated bioenergy project focused on producing bioethanol from cassava, with plans to expand into Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production. The initiative is expected to enhance Ethiopia’s energy security, reduce foreign fuel dependence, and create extensive rural employment opportunities.
With over eight decades of institutional experience, EMC aims to leverage its expertise in natural resource development to ensure Ethiopia fully benefits from its mineral and biofuel potential. Sunbird Bioenergy Africa brings its proven track record in bioethanol production across the continent, positioning the collaboration as a model for effective public-private partnership.
The project could eventually cultivate up to 200,000 hectares of cassava, generate more than 120,000 jobs, and produce an estimated 600 million liters of renewable fuel annually. The agreement aligns with Ethiopia’s broader strategy to modernize its energy and transport sectors while supporting its national transition toward a low-carbon, self-reliant economy.
