Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) announced that civil works on the Koisha Power Generation Project have reached 70 percent completion, marking a major milestone for one of Ethiopia’s flagship energy initiatives.

In a statement shared on his social media page, the Prime Minister noted that the assessment of the macroeconomic performance for the first 100 days of the 2025/26 fiscal year commenced with a visit to the Koisha project site. He emphasized that significant progress has been made since his previous visit, with the dam’s height now reaching 128 meters.

The 1,800-megawatt (MW) Koisha Dam, located in the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region, is expected to generate approximately 6,460 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity annually upon completion. Standing 201 meters tall and extending 1,012 meters in length, it ranks among the largest infrastructure projects in Ethiopia’s history.

The Prime Minister described the project’s steady advancement as a reflection of Ethiopia’s ongoing commitment to securing sustainable energy sources and accelerating economic growth. Once operational, the Koisha Power Generation Project is anticipated to significantly boost national electricity capacity and support the country’s industrialization drive.
