Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed today inaugurated the first phase of the Ogaden Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) Project in Calub, Somali Region of Ethiopia. The facility, with an annual production capacity of 111 million liters, marks a milestone in Ethiopia’s drive to harness its natural gas reserves for national development.
“In Calub, Somali Region, we inaugurate the first phase of the Ogaden Liquified Natural Gas Project, with an annual production capacity of 111 million liters. At the same time, we launch the second phase, which will add a capacity of 1.33 billion liters per year,” the Prime Minister announced in a social media post this afternoon.
The Prime Minister further noted that the project plays a critical role in supporting Ethiopia’s broader energy strategy, including emerging industries such as crypto-mining.
“Without a doubt, all the mega projects we inaugurated today in the Somali Region, collectively valued at 10 billion USD including associated infrastructure, will be carried through to completion, as we have always been committed to finishing what we start,” Abiy underscored.
The Ogaden LNG project is expected to boost Ethiopia’s energy self-sufficiency and strengthen its position as a regional player in the energy sector.
