The Ethiopian Mineral Development S.C. (EMD) has announced that its Coal Washing and Processing Factory has washed and sold 38,091 tons of coal since commencing operations earlier this year.
The facility, located in the Dawro Zone of the Southwestern Ethiopian People's Region, was officially inaugurated by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (Dr.) in January this year.
According to GebreMariam Setegn, Director General of the Regional Mining and Energy Development Agency, the factory has a daily processing capacity of 3,600 tons of coal. The Director highlighted that production began immediately after the inauguration and, by May 2, had already processed and sold over 38,000 tons of coal.
Currently, four coal producers from the Dawro Zone are supplying raw coal to the facility. Producers from the neighboring Konta Zone have also been authorized to contribute, with one supplier having already commenced deliveries. However, the factory is not yet operating at full capacity, primarily due to limited raw coal supply.
The factory has created 195 jobs, including both permanent and temporary positions, supporting economic growth in the region. Once operating at optimal capacity, the facility is expected to meet up to 25 percent of Ethiopia’s national coal demand.
