Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) has confirmed that it is currently supplying 265 megawatts (MW) of electricity daily to Kenya under a power purchase agreement between the two nations. The Ethio-Kenya 500kV converter station plays a vital role in this regional energy export, facilitating power interconnection across East Africa.

The converter station, which began operations three years ago, receives electricity from the Wolaita Sodo Number Two distribution station and uses 12 converter transformers and 1,680 thyristors to transmit power. With a transmission capacity of 2,000 MW, the station spans 1,060 kilometers from Ethiopia to Kenya.

Mekonnen Kasse, a maintenance expert at the station, explained that under the current agreement, Ethiopia supplies 200 MW for 18 hours each day and an additional 65 MW for the remaining six hours. The station is being upgraded to accommodate growing power demands and to support future power transmission plans to Tanzania and other countries.
