Power Saving Bulbs to Save Energy in Ethiopia

It is expected that more than ten million power saving light bulbs imported in Ethiopia will save 176 MW of energy according to the Ministry of Water and Energy.

5 million previously imported power saving light bulbs have been able to save 88 MW of energy explained Bezuneh Tolcha, Public Relation and communication Director with the Ministry.

An additional 5 million bulbs imported last year are expected to raise the total amount of energy saved to 176 MW he said.

The 176 MW saved by the bulbs is equal to the power generated by the Melka Wakena power station explained Bezuneh.

The newly imported power saving bulbs will have an extended period of service estimated at 10,000 hours whereas similar bulbs previously imported could only serve 1,000 hours said Bezuneh.

The bulbs, imported by the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation will be sold at discounted prices supported by government subsidies he said.

Import of the old type of light bulbs that consume higher amounts of energy is banned as of the 6th of January 2012 noted Bezuneh.
