Delegates of General Electric, the American multinational corporation, are scheduled to arrive here next week for the purpose of holding talks with the Ethiopian Electric and Power Corporation (EEPCo) on renewable energy investment projects in Ethiopia, Mekuria Lemma, Corporate Planning Head of EEPCo, said.
According to Meheret Debebe, CEO of EEPCo, General Electric has already expressed interest in investing in Ethiopia in the renewable energy sector.
The specific energy sub-sectors General Electric intends to invest in and the amount of the investment outlays are yet to be known after the company holds talks next week with EEPCo and other concerned government offices and authorities.
According to Mekuria, General Electric is expected to invest in solar and wind energy projects. The company will provide the finance by itself for the investment projects it will be launching in Ethiopia.
The energy and mining sectors in Ethiopia have been attracting several American companies, including Blue Diamond, a new American energy company, which is planning to launch wind energy projects here, Mekuria said.
General Electric operates in more than 100 countries around the world and employs more than 300,000 people worldwide.
