Wind and Solar Resource Assessment Revealed

A master plan assessing the Wind and Solar resources of Ethiopia conducted by Hydro China Corporation was revealed this week.

Ethiopia has a potential capacity of more than 1.3 million MW for wind resources and annual reserves of 2 million TWh of solar energy according to the Master Plan.

The study included various aspects including field investigations to establish solar and wind energy resources in the country as well as preparing wind and solar energy resources assessments for the Master Plan.

The master plan will contribute to plans to develop the electric power in the country according to Alemayehu Tegenu, Minister for Water and Energy speaking on the occasion.

The government has plans to develop national renewable energy sources as part of plans to enhance the use of renewable energy to build a green economy said Alemayehu.

The master plan took 17 months to prepare according to Wang Bin, President of the Hydro China Corporation.

It is to be remembered that Ethiopia entered into an agreement with the Chinese government to undertake the assessment of national wind and solar energy resources in 2010.

The wind and solar resources of Ethiopia are ten times more than was estimated said Wang Bin. It is expected that renewable energy will be an asset in maintaining rapid economic growth in the country he added.

In related news the Ministry of Water and Energy and Hydro China signed a Memorandum of Understanding for Hydro-power Potential General Survey Project.
