Ethiopia to Produce 50MW from Refuse

Ethiopia is borrowing 1.78 billion birr to produce 50MW of power from refuse accumulated at the Repi Waste Disposal in Addis Ababa according to the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation. This ground breaking effort is part of plans to diversify the national power supply it was said.

The EEPCo signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Cambridge Industries, a UK company, to facilitate the project including garbage collection, treatment and conversion to electric power.

The financing for the project was obtained through a low interest loan said Miskir Negash, Head of Public Relation of the corporation.

The 47 hectare Repi waste disposal site (commonly known as Koshe) receives 1,500 m3 of waste daily although it is now in the process of closure with waste processing to be moved to a much larger site at Legetafo.

EEPCo has requested seven hectares of land from the 47 hectares of the Repi waste site from the Addis Ababa city administration to establish a power generating plant. It is planned that the plant will utilize 75 tons of waste everyday to generate the targeted amount of power said Misikir.

The feasibility study for the project conducted by the EEPCo and Cambridge Industries considers collecting waste across the nation. The project is expected to meet 50% of the national plan to generate 103.5MW of energy from biogas.
