Ethiopia Receives $80 Million Loan for Electric Project

Ethiopia has received an 80 million dollar soft loan for a project to construct and expand electric power transmission lines from EDCF, South Korean state bank announced the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation.

The loan agreement will be signed between the Ethiopian Ministry of Finance and Economic Development and a representative of the Korean government here in Addis Ababa soon.

The project is an expansion of the Beles-Bahir Dar- Sululta transmission line stretching from Debremarkos-Gebreguracha-Sululuta over 212 KM and carrying 400 KV explained Misikir Negash Head of Corporate Communications with the EEPCo.

The project includes a 230 KV transmission line that stretches between Sululta and Legetafo and Suluta and Chancho, distances of 22 KM each said Miskir. The project also includes the construction and expansion of 256 KM of transmission line and construction of two power distribution stations.

The first power distribution station with the capacity to handle 400 KV is expected to be constructed in Gebreguracha while the second station able to handle 230 KV will be erected in Chancho.

The project is a part of the Ethio-Sudan Power transmission line.

It is to be remembered that Ethiopia completed a 41 million US dollar power transmission line that links the national grid with Sudan allowing the export of 100 MW to begin with. Ethiopia is currently exporting 35 MW to Djibouti raising 1.5 million dollars every month.

Ethiopia has plans to begin power exports to various countries in the region including to Kenya, South Sudan, Somalia, Tanzania and Yemen.
