Oil Discovery in Kenya Indicative for Ethiopian Exploration

The recent discovery of oil in Kenya is indicative for oil exploration in Ethiopia based on the geographical similarities of the two countries according to experts.

Tullow Oil, which extended its exploration activity to Kenya and Ethiopia after discovering oil in Uganda’s Lake Albert Rift Basin, expects to drill the first well in Ethiopia in the third quarter of 2012.

It is expected the first well will be drilled in September according to an expert with the Tullow office in Ethiopia.

Tullow announced that the Ngamia-1 exploration in Kenya discovered 20 meters of oil last week. The well located yielded oil with similar properties to the light waxy crude discovered in Uganda said the statement released by the company.

The well will be drilled to a depth of about 2700 meters to explore for deeper potential and to better identify the exact amount of oil deposit.

Tullow reached an arrangement with Canadian Africa Oil for a 50% interest in the South Omo Block in Ethiopia which was complemented by the 50% interest in five Kenyan licensed areas.

Oil exploration in Ethiopia began a year after similar operations had been launched in Kenya with many similar prospects and leads identified.
