Ethiopian University Selects Designs for Expansion Group

Hawassa University, Ethiopia selected designs for additional buildings to be constructed as part of its expansion program.

The winners of the competition were BET Architects, K2N Consulting Architecture and Engineers plc and were each awarded 50,000 birr for their designs.

Competing companies were asked to deliver designs for one of the projects that the University is undertaking said Denbeshu Nuaere, Construction and Maintenance Director with the University.

Bids for Commercial Bank of Ethiopia Headquarters Revealed

Bid proffered by international contractors for the construction of the headquarter building of the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia were revealed last week.

The largest sum of money proposed proved to be the 6.4 billion birr offered by China Jiangizu International, while the China State Construction submitted a financial proposal of more than 4.5 billion birr. The last company, of the three that had acceptable technical proposals,  Associated Construction and Investment, a Dubai-based construction company offered the lowest bid of more than 3 billion birr.

Ethiopian Airlines Finalize Deal for HQ Construction

Ethiopian Airlines, Ethiopia’s flag carrier, has finalized the deal for the construction of its Head Quarter building inside of Bole International Airport with BET Architects plc and its partner Soehene Partners Architects.

The deal was signed by Yissehak Zewoldi, Vice President of Alliances & Corporate Strategic Planning with Ethiopian and Tesfamariam Teshome, Manager, Senior Partner, and Architect at BET Architects plc on Friday.

The deal was reached after a long negotiation process over a period of almost a year.

Ethiopian Capital to Build 90,000 Condos

The city administration of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia announced plans to build 90,000 condominium houses over the next three years as part of its plans for development.

The project is expected to benefit an estimated 450,000 residents of Addis Ababa according to Kassa Wolde-Senbet, Head of the Communication Affairs Office with the City administration.

The housing development project has been able to build more than 97,000 condominium houses at more than 100 locations with 71,000 condos transferred to homeowners  up to last Ethiopian year noted Kassa.

Ethiopian Products Lead Construction Exhibit

Ethiopian products were dominate at the second ISE Construction and Housing Exhibition held from the 12th-16th of January in Ethiopia. Fifty local and international exhibitors were represented at the exhibition.

It took two months to organize the exhibition which aimed to correct mistakes made in the first one and to include a wide range of industries with a majority of participants being from the construction industry explained Mekdela Mekuria, Marketing and Outreach Executive at Lexicon Promotion Service plc.

Ethiopian Roads Authority Looking for $650 million from African Bank

The Ethiopian Roads Authority is seeking 650 million US dollars from the African Development Bank. The authority, headquartered in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, plans to use the money to finalize the Road Sector Development Program by 2015.

The authority plans to utilize 350 million US dollars of the money it acquires from the African bank on five new projects.

Salini Expresses Interest in Constructing HQ for Ethiopian Bank

Salini Construction Spa has expressed interest in constructing the headquarters of the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia.

The Italian construction company responded to a call for interest in the design and construction of the 52 storey building. Twenty other international bidders also expressed interest in the project.

In 2009 Commercial Bank awarded the design to Universal Consultants partnering with Henn Architekten a German company. Various challenges resulted in this deal failing to materialize.

Three months ago the bank issued another invitation for consultancy services to handle the design modification and supervision.

Expanded Cement Factory to Produce 1.3 Bln tn a Year

The expanded Messebo Cement Factory was inaugurated on Saturday, 25 June 2011. About 2.3 billion birr was spent on the expansion project.

ith the expansion project alone, the factory can produce 3,000 tonnes of cement a day and 1.3 million tonnes a year. Therefore the factory’s production capacity grows to 2.2 billion tonnes a year, according to Hatsey Berhe, general manager of Messebo Cement Factory.
