Ethiopian Roads Authority to Construct Roads to Sugar Factories

The Ethiopian Roads Authority is set to construct ten new roads that will link newly constructed sugar factories with the national road network.

The roads are intended to link the sugar factories being constructed in mainly remote areas. It is expected that ERA will float bids for the construction of the 574 kilometers of roads required to realize this project. The road construction plan calls for 519 kilometers of asphalt roads and 55 kilometers of gravel roads according to sources.

ERA will float the first five tenders within the next 2 months it was said.

The authority projects that 48 percent of companies to be interested in these projects will be domestic contractors while 52 percent of interest will be seen from international contractors.

The roads to be built will connect the sugar factories as follows: The Injibara-Pawe road will connect Beles Sugar factory and the Pawe-Aima road will connect Kesem Sugar factory. The second round of bidding will be opened with the tenders for Omo bridge-Turmi, Weito-Turg roads.

It is to be remembered that Ethiopian Sugar Corporation has launched the construction of ten new sugar factories to meet growing demand and to develop the national potential to become a significant exporter of sugar to the international market.
