ERA Seeking Bridge Improvement

The Ethiopian Roads Authority is set to implement a five year ‘Bridge Improvement Master Plan’ to help archive information on bridges and to register the standard of service in the country.

The project is expected to cost above 394 million birr according to Samson Wondimu, Head of Public Relations with the authority.

About 20 million birr has been allocated for the construction and maintenance of bridges in this fiscal year he said.

There are more than 4300 bridges in the country according to a national inspection carried our two years ago said Samson. The authority is planning on rehabilitating 640 bridges in the short run he said.

Preparations have already been completed for the rehabilitation of a bridge on the Kombolicha -Woldiya road at a total cost of 18 million birr according to Samson.

The authority has offered capacity building training programs for local contractors in partnership with the government of Japan towards realizing this plan explained Samson.
