The Construction of Kombolcha Airport Progressing

The construction work on Kombolcha Airport, Ethiopia is underway according to an announcement from the Ethiopian Airports Enterprise. The airport project is expected to cost an estimated 149 million birr up to completion according to Wondim Teklu, Head of Public Relations with the enterprise.

The construction includes a 2 kilometers long runway and a 4 kilometer long feeder road to the airport said Wondim.

The airport is offering services alongside the construction project that is underway to meet the goals of the second phase of the airport he noted. The airport will be equipped to serve Bombardier Q400 aircraft once this phase of construction is finished explained Wondim.

The airport is expected to create opportunities of employment for an estimated 500 people when the project  is completed in the next 16 months he added.

The Kombolcha Airport is located in one of the national development corridors and is expected to support and facilitate import and export activities.

It is to be remembered that the first phase of the project included the construction of a passengers’ terminal, the controlling tower and fences, as well as other features. The first phase program was completed with a total outlay of 100 million birr.
