Ethiopia Commodity Exchange (ECX) traded commodities worth Birr 48.83 billion during the 2025/26 fiscal year, significantly exceeding its annual target, according to the Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration.
The Exchange had targeted Birr 29.1 billion in export commodity trades during the year, meaning actual trading value surpassed the target by Birr 19.73 billion and reached 167.8 percent of the planned level.
The ministry said the latest performance also represented a 79 percent increase from the Birr 27.2 billion in commodities traded during the previous fiscal year.
Alongside the increase in trading activity, ECX expanded its commodity quality inspection, certification and weighing services.
During the fiscal year, the Exchange issued quality inspection certificates for 14,327 samples. Of these, 8,499 were coffee samples, while 5,828 involved oilseeds and pulses.
ECX also extended inspection services beyond commodities traded directly through its platform. It inspected 2,314 vehicles carrying 38,710 tons of commodities for cooperatives and direct-link traders and issued grading certificates for the products.
The Exchange additionally provided weighing services for 17,648 vehicles carrying a combined 695,073 tons of commodities during the year.
ECX is also working to broaden the range of products covered by its trading system. According to the ministry, the Exchange has finalized contract specifications and quality standards for three additional commodities: opal, cotton, and hides and skins.
The planned inclusion of the products is expected to expand the range of commodities traded through ECX and strengthen standardized commodity trading in Ethiopia.
