Ethiopian Stock Exchange (ESX) has officially commenced trading. The launch event, held today, was attended by senior government officials, bank presidents, and development partners.

Wegagen Bank and Gadda Bank became the first institutions to start trading on the exchange, having registered their securities and fulfilled regulatory requirements.

Finance Minister Ahmed Shide added that the launch responds to long-standing investor demand and is expected to open new investment opportunities.

Tilahun Kassahun (PhD), CEO of the Ethiopian Securities Exchange, confirmed that the ESX had officially begun operations after completing all necessary preparations. “This marks a major milestone in Ethiopia’s journey toward building a modern financial system,” he said.

National Bank Governor Mamo Mihretu emphasized the importance of establishing a robust capital market to address economic challenges. He noted that the ESX would help promote price stability and boost savings, with plans to further enhance market efficiency.

The Ethiopian Securities Exchange, established as a public-private partnership, is the country’s first securities market platform. Its primary goal is to accelerate economic growth through transparent and secure capital market operations, thereby supporting effective capital mobilization across the economy.
