
Wegagen Capital Investment Bank S.C. has officially launched operations, becoming Ethiopia’s first private investment bank under the country's new capital market framework.
The launch event, held at Hilton Addis Ababa, was attended by prominent figures, including Dr. Tilahun Ismael, CEO of the Ethiopian Securities Exchange (ESX); Hana Tehelku, Director General of the Ethiopian Capital Market Authority (ECMA); and State Minister of Trade & Regional Integration, Yasmin Wohabrebbi.
Dr. Aklilu Wubet, Chairperson of Wegagen Capital’s Board, noted that the bank was founded with a paid-up capital of Birr 385 million by visionary individuals and institutions committed to boosting Ethiopia’s economic growth. He emphasized the bank’s pioneering status, having received its operational license from ECMA on March 21, 2025, and becoming the first trading member of ESX on May 14, 2025.
CEO Brutawit Dawit Abdi stated that Wegagen Capital is committed to setting a new benchmark in Ethiopia’s financial sector through integrity, innovation, and impact. She stressed the bank’s role in unlocking capital, driving investment, and supporting national development.
Wegagen Capital offers a wide range of services including capital raising, securities underwriting, trading advisory, mergers and acquisitions consulting, and intermediation between issuers and investors. Its clients will include government entities, public enterprises, corporations, and high-net-worth individuals.
The firm operates independently from Wegagen Bank, opening opportunities for broader collaboration across the financial sector.
