Ethio Telecom has launched a new fast payment system, “Tolo,” on Telebirr, introducing a digital solution for toll and fine payments on the Addis Ababa - Adama Expressway.
The company said the system was implemented in partnership with the Ethiopian Payments Enterprise as part of efforts to modernize digital payment services and improve the user experience on one of the country’s key economic corridors.
Speaking at the launch, Ethiopian Payments Enterprise Manager Mustafa Abbasimel said the new toll and fine payment management system will fully replace the previous manual process with a modern automated platform.
He noted that earlier efforts to introduce such a system had been constrained by limited digital infrastructure. However, he said the current setup now enables a fully contactless payment process.
According to the company, the new service reflects Ethio Telecom’s broader push to support a transparent and efficient digital economy by modernizing public services in line with the Digital Ethiopia 2030 strategy.
Through the Telebirr Super App, toll charges are automatically deducted using self-service technology, allowing vehicles to pass without stopping for payment. The company said the system is expected to make travel on the expressway faster and more convenient for users.
