Berhan International Bank to Launch Internet Services

Berhan International Bank is ready to launch Internet Banking services as soon as it receives the go ahead from the National Bank of Ethiopia.

The bank is ready to launch online services with the completion of the online security audit that Ernst and Young was undertaking for it since last April. The audit was planned to evaluate the security of the bank form internal and external breaches said Amha Bekele, Partner at Ernst and Young and IT Head for East Africa.

Berhan customers will be able to access balance information, checking accounts, savings accounts, loan accounts, view bank statements, order checks and conduct intra-bank money transfers said Solomon Mamo, Director of Information Systems with Berhan.

The online services being offered by Berhan are limited but the bank is ready to offer online transaction services including payment of bills once such a system is laid out in the country said Solomon.

Berhan can easily launch e-banking as the software system installed for the CORE banking solutions by Neptune already includes the necessary features he explained.

The National Bank is yet to acknowledge online banking services as that would require online transactions and the central bank is still in the process of commissioning a study before approving such activities said Solomon Desta, Bank Supervision Director with the NBE.

Berhan Bank launched operations in 2009 with a paid up capital of 95.7 million birr. The bank has since attained a paid up capital of 193 million birr and subscribed capital of 235 million birr as of last money. Berhan has opened 15 branches to date and is in the process of opening two more by July.
