India to Follow Through on Agreement Reached with Ethiopia

India is to establish a Barefoot Training College, an ICT Center and a Farm Science Center in Ethiopia as part of the pledge to support 80 capacity building institutes in Africa at the Second India-Africa Forum Summit held in Addis Ababa last May.

The new institutions will be in addition to the Vocational Training Center agreed upon at the first India-Africa Forum according to Bhagwant Bishnoi, Indian Ambassador to Ethiopia speaking at the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation and International Students day event held at the Hilton Addis Hotel.

The number of students offered training under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation program established in 1964 has seen a steady increase reaching 150 at the present from an original number of just five said Bishnoi.

Ethiopia has a significant role in the program because candidates selected for training are eager to learn and return to their country to put in practice the education that they received said the Ambassador.

The Indian Embassy administers 50 scholarships a year while an estimated 350 students go to India as self sponsored scholars noted Bishnoi.

The event held by the ITEC was attended by representatives of the Ethiopian India Graduates Forum which comprises of Ethiopian alumni of Indian universities.
