Samsung is to set up a new Traffic Management Center to offer a centrally controlled traffic system in Ethiopia’s Capital,
Addis Ababa.
The South Korean electronics company is in the process of conducting a pre-feasibility study and is expected to secure a loan from the Korean Import-Export Bank to finance the project.
The project was first discussed between representatives from Samsung and the Addis Ababa City Roads Authority in November of 2010 according to Engineer Fekade Hailu, General Manager of the Addis Ababa City Roads Authority.
Samsung said that funding for the project can be obtained from the Korean Import-Export Bank at the time said Fekade. The Traffic Management Center will enable the authorities to control all traffic light activities from the central controlling axis via video relay he explained.
The roads authority expects to privatize the operation, contracting with private operators to run and maintain the traffic lights to ensure a better quality of service noted Fekade.
The AACRA is hoping to replace all traffic lights in the city to create a new system as well as installing new traffic signals on newly constructed roads in the long term although it will concentrate on maintaining the traffic lights that are already in place for the moment he said.
