The tax authority in Ethiopia is maintaining its drive to register businesses for value-added taxation across the country.

In Oromia Regional State businesses are being asked to install cash registers for the first time while regional towns are coming under the scrutiny again.

In Adama, Bishoftu and Duken out of an estimated 1, 151 businesses identified for VAT registration only 28.3% have complied by January of 2012.

The tax authorities have targeted to raise 8.8 billion birr from the Adama bureau this fiscal year with more businesses expected to be registered in the East Shoa Zone, which includes Adama, Bishoftu and Dukem.

VAT registered businesses need to bring the purchase receipts and fill out the relevant paperwork to become a part of the system according to Tesfaye Hailu, Manager of the East Shoa Zone  Revenues & Customs Bureau.

The federal tax authority, the revenue bureaus of the three towns and the zonal revenue offices jointly offered trainings to business required to become VAT registered and purchase cash registers.
