Ethiopian Telecom Earns 5.6 Billion Birr in Revenue

Ethio Telecom earned 5.6 billion in revenue in the first two quarters of the fiscal year according to Jean Michel Latute, Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopia’s sole telecom provider. 

The revenue was raised from mobile, internet and other services said Latute.

The corporation serves 15 million customers as of last December with the number of subscriptions seeing a 31% growth in the first half of the current fiscal year he noted.

Ethio telecom has introduced a range of services to extend national and international services and offer alternatives this fiscal year explained Latute.

The corporation has reached an agreement with the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation to facilitate the installation of Addis-Bahir Dar and Addis-Galafi optical fiber network to enhance the quality and the reliability of the line he said.

The company has also completed steps to eliminate faulty power equipment in Addis Ababa and is launching similar assessment to regional states.

Ethio telecom is rehabilitating its optical fiber lines and is using different lines for services such as credit transfer, call me back and voice mail to limit congestion said Latute.

Repeated acts of sabotage that account for 99% of the damage suffered by the fiber optic networks in different parts of the country is significantly impairing the quality of telecom services said Abdurahim Ahmed, External Communication Officer with Ethio Telecom.

Problems encountered by customers trying to recharge there prepaid accounts were primarily due to the line becoming congested and that the problem has now been resolved said Abdurahim.
