Ethiopia’s Immigration and Citizenship Service (ICS) has launched a 10 year residency permit, branded as the Golden Visa, as part of efforts to attract foreign investors and support the country’s ongoing economic reform agenda.
The ICS Deputy Director General Gosa Demissie said the new permit was aimed at foreign nationals making significant contributions to the national economy. The initiative is intended to improve the investment climate and strengthen Ethiopia’s position as a destination for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).
According to Gosa, the Golden Visa is a standardized electronic residency permit valid for 10 years, offering long term stability to high-impact investors and allowing them to live and operate in Ethiopia with fewer administrative obstacles. He noted that similar long-term residency schemes are already in place in other countries, typically ranging from five to ten years, and said Ethiopia has introduced its own model to remain competitive.
The visa will reduce processing times, eliminate repeated procedures, and improve service efficiency. The holders will also benefit from streamlined entry and exit procedures, including faster processing at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport.
Gosa said the measure is particularly timely as Ethiopia begins opening its real estate sector to foreign nationals. He disclosed that a separate five year property visa will also be introduced for individuals and families purchasing immovable property in the country.
Beyond the Golden Visa, ICS has rolled out other reforms, including expedited services, digital payment systems, improved visa-on-arrival procedures, and better passport distribution mechanisms. Officials say the broader goal is to create a more accessible and efficient service environment that supports investment, industrial growth, and foreign currency inflows.
