Ethiopia and Malaysia held their first high-level business forum today, bringing together government officials and members of the business community to discuss areas for potential cooperation. The event was attended by Ethiopia’s President Taye Atske Selassie and Malaysia’s Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
President Taye noted that although diplomatic relations between the two countries began in 1965, current global economic conditions make it timely to explore ways to deepen engagement. He stated that opportunities for collaboration exist in sectors such as trade, investment, agriculture, livestock, and mining. He also referenced Ethiopia’s ongoing efforts in digitalization and their role in improving financial inclusion and economic services.
Ethiopia encouraged Malaysian companies to review available investment opportunities and consider areas where partnership may be feasible. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim remarked on the longstanding relationship between the two countries and commended Ethiopia’s recent reform efforts. He highlighted the importance of mutual understanding and consistent engagement in building sustainable bilateral relations.
The Malaysian delegation included representatives from various industries examining prospects in digital technology, energy transition, data services, and artificial intelligence. Both sides indicated an interest in continuing discussions on practical areas of cooperation in the period ahead.
