Ethiopia's population has reached an estimated 135.3 million, according to the 2025 World Population Report released by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). The milestone comes as the country embarks on revising its National Population Policy, originally adopted in 1985.
The Ministry of Planning and Development is leading the revision to reflect the country’s current demographic and socio-economic conditions. The updated policy aims to align with Ethiopia’s development priorities and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The policy revision involves a comprehensive review of past outcomes, with four thematic documents prepared by a Technical Working Committee. These cover demographic trends, sectoral policy reviews, international best practices, and recommendations for future action. Drafts are under review by senior officials.
The announcement coincided with the launch of the UNFPA’s 2025 report, The Real Fertility Crisis, at a national forum attended by government and civil society. UNFPA’s Deputy Representative, Taiwo Oluyomi, emphasized Ethiopia’s demographic potential, highlighting the need for investment in youth, health, and education.
With a fertility rate of 3.81 children per woman and a median age just over 19, Ethiopia’s population could reach 170 million by 2035 and 225 million by 2050. The revised policy is expected within two years, integrated with the Ten Years Perspective Development Plan.
