Ethiopia: Tax Appeal Commission Resolves 686 Cases, Plans 3 Regional Offices

Tax Appeal Commission

The Tax Appeal Commission has reported progress in resolving tax-related cases and announced plans to expand its presence to regional states, according to a recent statement by the Commission’s President.

Of the 458 pending cases under review, 51 were assigned for response, 406 reached the oral argument stage, one case was transferred to the bench, and five were moved forward for final decision.

During the current fiscal year, the Commission issued decisions on 686 of the 1,144 applications it received, achieving a 99.2 percent implementation rate, a 0.5 percent improvement compared to the same period last year.

The Commission clarified that taxpayers with complaints related to revenue and customs must first approach the relevant institution. If the institution fails to respond, the Commission will accept the case for review and possible appeal.

The President also noted that of 17 cases escalated to the High Court, five were reviewed and reaffirmed, while the remaining 12 are under review.

Additionally, applicants are entitled to a refund of 50 percent of the fees paid during the appeal process, while decisions remain binding on the government. Plans are underway to establish regional tax appeal commissions in Amhara, Oromia, and Sidama by 2018 (E.C.).
