The Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration (MoTRI) has announced that newly approved mandatory Ethiopian national standards will be enforced starting June 8, 2025 (June 1, 2017 EC), expanding the range of products subject to quality control.

In a statement, the ministry reminded importers of their obligation to comply with the new mandatory Ethiopian national standards in addition to the previously implemented regulations. The enforcement aims to ensure the quality and safety of imported and locally produced goods, aligning them with national and international benchmarks.

The ministry also granted a four-month grace period for products that were already in transit or had secured a banking license or a Franco Valuta purchase authorization. These products will be processed under existing procedures before transitioning to the new regulatory framework.

The Ministry specified that construction glass, aluminum and aluminum alloy products, paint products, vehicle seat belts, motorcycle helmets, speed control devices, and vehicle inspection standards will now be subject to inspection.

MoTRI emphasized that regulatory enforcement will be stringent, aiming to foster a more reliable and standardized trade environment in the country.
