On October 17, 2023, Ethiopian Investment Commission (EIC) made significant strides in bolstering investment ties with Chinese companies at the Ethiopia-China Investment Forum Series–Beijing Episode II, held in Beijing, China.
During the event, the EIC, represented by Commissioner Lelise Neme, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with two Chinese pharmaceutical companies and a Chinese agro-processing company. The confirmed the firms' commitment to investing in Ethiopia through a social media post.
The investment forum attracted more than 300 potential investors and featured keynote speeches from Ahmed Shide, the Ethiopian Finance Minister, and Mrs. Lelise Neme. Discussions centered on the investment potentials in Ethiopia, particularly in the mining sector and other priority areas.
This forum serves as a significant catalyst for Ethiopia's growing economy, particularly considering the recent elevation of bilateral ties between Ethiopia and China to the All-Weather Strategic Cooperation Partnership level.
In related news, during a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on October 17, 2023, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed emphasized the importance of Chinese investments in Ethiopia's economy. He further encouraged increased investments in key sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, ICT, mining, and tourism.
